Following an accident in which a city bus hit a pedestrian at Seomyeon intersection, killing two people, a 'pedal dashcam' was installed on a city bus in Busan for the first time.

The system, which can reveal the cause of the accident, also has the ability to detect collisions and lane departures, and is expected to prevent accidents.

Reporter Choi Wee-ji reported.

Report

A city bus rushed into a crosswalk despite a walk signal, killing two pedestrians.

The driver of the bus stated that "the braking system was not working properly," and the police investigation is ongoing.

The same claim was made in March of last year, when a city bus plowed into a car and three cars, injuring 10 people, but the police investigation revealed that the cause of the accident was a pedal malfunction.

As a result of repeated accidents like this, a 'pedal dashcam' was installed on a city bus in Busan for the first time. The device records the driver's feet while the bus is in operation, so it is possible to check which pedal was actually pressed when the accident occurred.

[Kwon Oh-ik/employee of an automotive AI equipment company: "The time of the (accident) and the time of the dashcam recording are analyzed by artificial intelligence so that you can check all of them in time, such as whether the brake was applied or not...."]

The bus driver's reaction is positive. They can clearly identify who is responsible in case of an accident.

[Lee Jong-yeol/City Bus Driver : "I was hoping that this would be installed as soon as possible so that I could prove that I was not at fault...."]

Along with the pedal dashcam, these cameras that recognize pedestrians and obstacles on the road were also installed. The pedal dashcam system also has a safety feature: if there is a possibility of a collision or lane departure, a warning voice will play to prevent an accident.

["Please pay attention to the road ahead."]

[Sung Hyun-do, Chairman of Busan Bus Transportation Business Union: "We have high expectations that fatal accidents can be prevented, and safety accidents in the car can be significantly reduced."]

The city of Busan and the Bus Transportation Business Union have decided to consider expanding the system to all city buses based on the results of the pilot operation.
