The Korea Transportation Safety Authority (KTSA) is using AI-based video analysis technology that detects and warns drivers of dangerous driving behaviors such as signal violations and drowsy driving in real time to create a safe bus operation environment that people can use with peace of mind.
As part of the AI-based route bus safety monitoring pilot project conducted this year, AI analyzed various risky driving behaviors such as drowsy driving, signal violation, failure to secure a safe distance, lane departure, pedestrian collision warning, mobile phone use, and smoking. As a result, the pilot project has resulted in a dramatic reduction in the accident rate.
Before and after pilot results,
-
Route bus drivers ran 66.1% fewer red lights,
-
Illegal U-turns decreased by 67.0
-
lane departures by 30.7%. Risky behaviors within the drivers were also significantly reduced,
-
Drowsy driving decreased by 84.3%,
-
smoking by 37.2%,
-
14.5% reduction in cell phone use.
The AI route bus safety monitoring pilot project is a proactive program that uses AI video analysis equipment to monitor drivers' risky behaviors such as violating traffic laws, such as running a red light, in real time, and immediately generates a warning sound to prevent accidents.
AI cameras are installed on the outside and inside of participating drivers' buses to monitor drivers' risky behaviors in real time with video analysis equipment, and when serious traffic violations such as signal violations, lane departures, cell phone use, drowsy driving, and neglecting to pay attention to the road ahead are detected, the AI equipment immediately generates a warning sound.
After monitoring, dangerous driving data such as speeding, hard braking, and sudden acceleration, as well as accident-related videos (emergency situations, accident videos, dizzying situations, etc.) are provided to drivers and drivers through the safe driving platform for driver education and remedial training.
In the future, the Korea Transportation Safety Authority plans to expand the application of this AI-based safety monitoring solution beyond route buses to charter buses and various transportation fields in cooperation with private companies, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, local governments, and transportation organizations. To this end, the KTSA has signed business agreements with the National Federation of Bus Transportation Business Unions, A.I.MATICS, and LG Electronics, and is also conducting a demonstration project to prevent traffic accidents caused by dangerous driver behavior such as drowsy driving by applying AI technology solutions to 15 commuter buses of LG Electronics on a pilot basis.
